I think the egg may be broken. Try grabbing the tarball and following the instructions at http://ipython.scipy.org/moin/Py4Science/InstallationOSX or http://ipython.scipy.org/moin/MatplotlibOSXBuildNotes I will see if we can do something about the os x egg situation, but the above may be the path of least resistance right now.
