Oddly, this hasn't been answered, so I will, but as I understand it from previous list conversations: no, there are no plans to bring back 3D capabilities in MPL. Take a look at https://svn.enthought.com/enthought/wiki/MayaVi for your 3D plotting needs, it's quite well supported by Enthought and can be used in tandem with MPL in the same ipython session.
