I'll let Andrew and JJ fill in some color, since they wrote the spine and axes_grid, respectively, but both are good. The spines are in the mainline and JJ's solution is in a toolkit, so when in doubt go with something in the mainline since that is more likely to be stable. Both JJ and Andrew will be attending the scipy sprint this year (if you're going to be there be sure to stop by), and one of the items on our agenda is to incorporate their work into a unified API in the mainline. So there may be some changes to one or both approaches, but hopefully soon we will have most of the feature set of both in our main axis code.
