This might be due to a bug in setuptools 0.6c11 <http://bugs.python.org/setuptools/issue90>. Try upgrading to setuptools 0.6c12 or distribute <http://pypi.python.org/pypi/distribute>, or use the matplotlib installer from <http://sourceforge.net/projects/matplotlib/files/matplotlib/matplotlib-0.99.1/>.
