I am getting the same error. Here is my console output:

After grepping through lots of code, I found that vcvarsall.bat is only listed in these files: C:\Python26\Lib\distutils\msvc9compiler.py C:\Python26\Lib\distutils\tests\test_msvc9compiler.py C:\Python26\Lib\site-packages\numpy\distutils\command\config.py C:\Python26\Lib\site-packages\numpy\distutils\fcompiler\compaq.py And after looking at some code comments, I think this is either a bug in python 2.6.4, or python 2.6 requires Visual Studio 2008.
