OK, I am in business. I read through the code that Alan linked to which helped me understand what to do, which does not involve overlaying any images. So, this thread is a dead end with respect to the original question. Here is the new graphic.

I like this, it is visually dense (marginal time series behavior, marginal density, and relationship between two variables) but does not seem cluttered.
