You might be able to do this (before importing pyplot or pylab):

matplotlib.rcParams['text.usetex'] = True
matplotlib.rcParams['text.latex.preamble'] = '\usepackage{libertine}'

and optionally (if you have xpdf or poppler installed):

matplotlib.rcParams['ps.usedistiller'] = 'xpdf'
