That error means mpl could not find libz, which probably means you don't have libpng installed either. mpl has a fair number of dependencies. See http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/users/installing.html#build-requirements On debian systems, there is a brilliant command apt-get build-dep python-matplotlib which will install everything you need to build mpl from source.
