Thanks for the response! Okay, I see your other thread, so I guess
I'll be one of your testers.

Since my op, I also tried to download:

matplotlib-1.1.0.tar.gz

and I got a Decompression Failed message in the Downloads window.
I checked my Safari settings, and
Safari is set to automatically decompress 'safe' files.
 guess it couldn't in the case of matplotlib.

Next, I tried decompressing and untaring myself:

$ tar xvfz matplotlib-1.1.0.tar.gz

...but after a lot of output it finished with:

x matplotlib-1.1.0/lib/matplotlib/mpl-data/fonts/ttf/
STIXGeneralBol.ttf: Truncated tar archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors.

Then I checked the md5, and I got:

$ md5 ~/Downloads/matplotlib-1.1.0.tar.gz
MD5 (/Users/7stud/Downloads/matplotlib-1.1.0.tar.gz) =
57a627f30b3b27821f808659889514c2

..which matches the md5 listed at sourceforge here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/matplotlib/files/matplotlib/
matplotlib-1.1.0/

So it seems to me like the tar.gz file at sourceforge is corrupted.
