mathtext.cal : cursive
mathtext.rm  : serif
mathtext.tt  : monospace
mathtext.it  : serif:italic
mathtext.bf  : serif:bold
mathtext.sf  : sans
mathtext.fontset : cm
mathtext.fallback_to_cm : True
mathtext.default : it

I haven't tried with all fonts, but it is the case with Bitstream Vera Sans and Helvetica. Can anyone confirm?

If I use the LaTeX renderer, it looks correct.
