Actually, interpolation set to 'none', not the Python None. Here is some
code:
a = np.zeros((8 * 12, 3))
a[::2, 0] = 1.0 # red
a[1::2, 2] = 0.75 # blue
a.shape = (8, 12, 3)
plt.imshow(a, interpolation='none')
plt.show()
Note that there is currently a bug in plt.imsave() that makes saving this
throw an exception (but you can still save using fig.savefig()).
