Okay --
I opened terminal, typed 'python' to being, then typed:
sudo port install py26-python
sudo port install py26-matplotlib
I recieved syntax errors:
>>> sudo port install py26-python
File "<stdin>", line 1
sudo port install py26-python
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
>>> sudo port install py26-matplotlib
File "<stdin>", line 1
sudo port install py26-matplotlib
