Could always ask it its name:
>>> import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
>>> from mpl_toolkits.mplot3d import Axes3D
>>> fig, ax = plt.subplots(1, 1, subplot_kw=dict(projection='3d'))
>>> ax.name
'3d'
You can do this with any axes type, such as polar axes and such.
