Do you need an `annotate`, or just a `text`? `text` has the `transform`
keyword, to which you can pass `ax.transAxes`.
ax.text(.9,.9, r"$\mathbf{" + lab +
")}$”,transform=ax.transAxes,ha=‘right’,va=‘center’)
