Areas & Prices reference buses

Hello,

The last MATPOWER versions define a new field, called 'areas' and 
described as follows :
% (+) Area Data Format
%       1   i, area number
%       2   price_ref_bus, reference bus for that area
What is the role of this field and where can I find more information 
about it ?
