Dear Madhurima,
Those instructions apply if you are using OS-X as your base OS. Otherwise, if
using Ubuntu or dare say every Unix flavor you don't need to configure the
MySQL server to run as a daemon (i.e. to run in the background automatically
everytime the machine starts -that's what that wiki section is about-) --the
package system will do it (or have already done it) for you.
From a Debian-like system (including Ubuntu), you should be able to do
"/etc/init.d/mysql <option>", where <option> can be one of "start", "stop",
"restart" and some others. The effect of those calls is self-explanatory. In
Ubuntu, you probably may also use "service mysql <option>". Probably, you need
to be root or use "sudo" to run these commands succesfully.
If you don't want to fiddle with the database, but just make sure it is up and
running for matterhorn, then you probably don't need to worry about those wiki
sections nor the aforementioned commands at all.
