Dear Matterhorn users, Rubencino and all the team in Vigo (Ruben, Pablo, Hector) have been working really hard during this summer to get everything ready for this fall semester "advanced" pilot (this one should be our last pilot before production)
Some of the ideas and developments done during this summer could be interesting for the community (as I realized last week with the CA+Worker aproach) but maybe it was my fault to push them too hard that they couldn't find the time to share on list. I'll try to fix that. During July I met almost every dean in UVigo in order to find the classrooms and lecturehalls for our fall semester pilot and to ping their interest in the new lecture recording service. The response was so enthusiastic that it really "scared" me. I started planning a real big deployment in less than 2 years and that's how the idea of the CA+Worker came. Ideas under the CA+Worker approach: - The "thick" intel i7 based CAs are able to record and process by themselves (as workers) all lectures of a day. A growing number of CAs will require less central facilities investments (mainly enlarge central storage and NAS performance). - The "thick" CAs have plenty of power to encode 2 MP4 streams on the fly, so no hw encoding capture cards are needed and the use of USB-HD cams is not a problem. - The spare CPU power opens the doors (in the future) to live streaming, virtual professor tracking on USB-HD camereas, etc... - The price of this "thick" CA is barely twice of a cheap CA's, but that only means an extra 350€ in the whole classroom setup, we saved much more by switching from SONY EVI cams to Logitech USB HD cams, and you also save in central infraestructure. - All the buildings where we will deploy CAs are on Campus so we don't expect netwok problems. And deploying standard "slim" CAs for not well-connected buildings is always posible. Thanks Tobias and Chris to table posible problems of this approach. More posible drawbacks are welcome :) For example, could you (or other MH gurus) foresee an important reduction of the CPU power needed to process a recording in the future?
