To answer myself:
it seems a lot that removing the ".recording"-file in
/opt/matterhorn/cache/captures/<id>/ sucessfully stops the capture
agent from knowing that there is something left over and thus from trying to
reingest.

some 502-failures on a capture, and manually copied the media.zip into the
inbox of the core, and now want the capture agent to forget about ingesting
(is still trying with 502 and crashing the core).
