I haven't filed on the authentication problem because I wasn't 100%
sure that I wasn't doing something truly stupid.

There are 4-5 places, it seems, where you have to make changes to get
LDAP working and I was planning to wait for a confirmation from the
community of "Yes, I got it working" or "No, it's a loser".

Can we get someone more familiar with Spring Security to test this and
write it up (I don't think details are in the Wiki anywhere)? Or would
a bug report "I don't think this works" be enough?
