Nope, they don't have to be connected to the internet any more than the reference CA does. They draw their power from their ethernet jack, but that can be mobilized using a POE injector. The only issues I've run into with very long duration captures like that have been ingest issues with proxies (ie, the proxy kills the connection because it's taking too long), and with disk space issues. If you are working with 1.2 or older then the ECD needs to zip up the media, which doubles the disk space required for a given capture. 1.3 and newer does not suffer from this. With the new firmware that came out around the Harvard Unconference things have stabilized a lot. Looking through the mail archives here I haven't seen any major complaints in a long time.
