We have been seeing a similar problem:

It isn't every capture but I have had greater success duplicating it with a
system not running a database (no postgres or MySQL setup) under high load. Do
you have something like this in your logs?

This doesn't look like it's holding for trim to me. When it does that
there's a message that says "Holding for user trim" or something very
similar. Also, when it goes into the trim hold state the admin UI has a
link to do the actual trimming. What does the admin UI say in your case?
