If you can find a volunteer to be the release manager for a 1.0.2 release, I'd say "feel free".
Since 1.1 is almost out the door, and we don't want to wind up in this situation again for the 1.1.x line, perhaps this merits another ticket to implement what you suggest: remove the scripts that rely on specific linux kernel versions from the source altogether.
