There is a root storage directory that you can also use, defined by the
"org.opencastproject.storage.dir" key in config.properties, and accessible via
the OSGI bundle and component contexts.

What in particular do you want to change? You can call
Attachment.setChecksum(), setMimeType, etc. directly, and these will be
serialized along with your new derived element.
