Great, thanks Josh, I didn't realise I had to ask for digest auth, I
thought it was somehow automatic. Just for posterity, here's the final
script I used:

authinfo.add_password( "Opencast
Matterhorn","qa.opencastproject.org:8080","admin", "opencast")
opener = urllib2.build_opener(authinfo)
urllib2.install_opener(opener)

request.add_header( 'X-Requested-Auth', 'Digest' );
