The role to welcome page configuration can be handled in xml, like this:

This allows the configurer to forward users to different welcome pages based on
their roles. I also added a small patch that stores the original URI
(including querystring) in a session attribute, so it can be used after
completing login. If the login is successful, the user is forwarded to their
requested URI. This may in some cases create sessions unnecessarily, so we can
disable this feature if that becomes a problem.
