Dear List: We are really worried about the issue MH-7698<https://opencast.jira.com/browse/MH-7698> . Some Spanish adopters have reported finding this problem and we can consistently reproduce it for every recording larger than 2 GB:
- In 32-bit machines, copying the video to distribution generates an exception "OutOfMemory". - In 64-bit machines, the file is trimmed to 2GB, but no exception appears. We have traced the cause of this bug back to the very FileChannel.transfeFrom(...) method, and Pablo's tests have shown counter-intuitive results, such as the fact that reducing the JVM memory makes the copy work, and vice-versa. We are really puzzled about this bug, since we have not been able to find any bug reported about FileChannels limiting the size of the copy. There's not bugs regarding this particular operation, and that is really surprising because it seems specifically aimed to copy large files. One would expect that 2GB is an unreasonably short limit. There is also no comments in the official API, or in any page we could find. We are also really puzzled that nobody throughout the Project has encountered this bug before. We have been distributing large videos for a while, but we wonder if nobody else is dealing with >2GB recordings. It that is so, we would like to know if they have found this issue. If possible, please try and ingest a mediapackage with >2GB tracks, to check if this bug also happens for you. The issue MH-7698 <https://opencast.jira.com/browse/MH-7698> describes the origin of the problem and the specific lines of the method causing it. Maybe some of you can figure out the problem behind all this. All we can think of, as unlikely as it sounds, is a bug in the Java codebase.
