Hi list, we had problems to install the Capture Agent under Ubuntu 11.04 and after I investigated the problem, it turned out that we have a general issue with the support of Ubuntu 11.04 and all upcoming versions. The Gstreamer does no longer support V4L. The Epiphan developers adopted their drivers and the VGA2USB is now a V4L2 device. Because of this they changed the behavior of the driver, too. Unfortunately this new behavior is not compatible with the current EpiphanProducer.
>From my point of view we have 3 options now: 1. Write a second version of the EpiphanProducer that we use in parallel with the current code, and we check the Gstreamer version at startup to select the right implementation. The advantage is that Matterhorn is not dependent on a specific Ubuntu version. The disadvantage is that we have to maintain and test both versions of the Producer. 2. Support for Ubuntu LTS versions only (on compatible releases). This would mean we say that we support with the current Matterhorn versions only Ubuntu 10.04 and compatible releases (9.10 and 10.10 i.e.) and we would switch to the V4L2 driver model with the Matterhorn released after Ubuntu 12.04 and than only support the new version. 3. Support the current Ubuntu 11.04+ version with the next upcoming Matterhorn release (probably 1.3) only. We would simply says for each Matterhorn release which versions of Ubuntu are supported. That would mean 1.1.x and 1.2.x are supporting Ubuntu < 11.04 and Matterhorn >= 1.3 will support Ubuntu >= 11.04. We here in Osnabrueck are not sure what would be the best way to go. I guess it will not be too complex to adopt the EpiphanProducer to the new V4L2 driver, so this is mainly a strategic decision.
