Hi Greg, I like the idea as it will enforce basic coding standards on the ui side and thereby lower the barrier to entry for new developers.
Keep in mind though that initially, quite some work will be needed to make the existing code conformant before we can activate checkstyle. However, it is worth the effort and will pay back many times as the codebase and the numbers of committers grows.
