Just a note that I would highly recommend focusing on elements of
documentation that can be sustainably maintained.  My issue with
UML is not in modelling per se, but in how the models often get out of
sync with the reality of the source code.  High level docs that end up
lying to you about the status of the code (through neglect because not
everyone wants them, has time to maintain them, etc) are not useful.

I see much less maintenance of modelling documents on open source
projects because they are largely volunteer driven, and see the
creation of these documents as a particular pitfall to watch out for.
