As far as I know, no work has been done to solve this. We overcome this problem
by creating a symbolic link pointing to a location within the NFS share but
*outside* the NFS share (specifically, we change the "inbox" default directory
with a link pointing to a directory in the share). We couldn't dig on this
problem because we had to put our pilot in production asap.
Re-reading the comments, I'm seeing this issue got mixed with the problem with
files bigger than 4 GB. Well, the NFS problem happens for big and small files,
so it's a different issue.
