Chris,

having a tape archive as the primary storage backend is an interesting use case 
I haven't thought of yet. So asychronicity is mandatory. To answer your 
question: Yes that should be possible and I'm glad you brought this up so we 
can consider this in the API design. But it will live somewhere else not in the 
SolrIndexManager since this won't be extended to be the archive.
