Dear Rudiger and list Hi Rudiger I am very glad for your very positive experience from Matterhorn 1.3 but unfortunately this is not the case here in Tel Aviv, at least not regarding our efforts to switch from 1.2 to 1.3.
We are trying for some time to install 1.3 on Ubuntu 10.04 with no success, I wrote to the list about the problem but there was no respond from the community. We also try to make the installation on Red Hat Linux following precisely the instructions on the website but again with no success. The product installation documentation looks clear enough but then again we are failing we the installation time after time. I wonder if there are more people having problems trying to install 1.3 or is it that we have some unique problem in TAU. And I must say my feedback is extreme positive. We record 19 lectures a week 90 minutes each with 7 CAs. We have recorded a few less than 60 lectures yet and not lost any recording yet and the problems that we encountered are from my point of view minor and in many cases not really matterhorn related. The confidence monitoring in the CA is currently very helpful to really make sure that everything works as expected during the recording. We had no reason to restart the Matterhorn servers or a capture agent yet (with one exception, see problem 2.) The problems we encountered: 1. VGA is scrumbled: This is a well know issue when the resolution of the VGA is changed while the PC is already connected to a recording VGA2USB device. One solution is to reconnect the VGA then. But we started to include the StarTech VGA-scalers that are recommended for the Capture Agents anyway. 2. VGA video gets stuck for a few seconds/minutes but it recovers after a while. I created a ticket for this http://opencast.jira.com/browse/MH-8799. But in general I suppose that I simply need a faster CPU. But to make sure it is not based on some artifacts I restarted the PC. 3. Audio not loud enough. After a hardware problem (damaged power supply) the volume on the amplifiers in the room was set too low. This was not in any way Matterhorn related. 4. On one CA the lecturer video was b/w. This was caused by a broken s-video-cable. 5. In one of over 60 recordings we needed to start the recording manually, for an unknown reason. The scheduled recording aborted after a few seconds. We noticed this with the CM and started the recording manually. 6. If we edit the metadata in the trim hold state, the date gets lost. This is a known issue too. I wanted to use MP4/H.264 for the streaming only, as you might have seen in my other mail some weeks ago. In the meantime we decided to use h.264 only for the higher qualities. For low and medium quality we switched back to FLV as this works much better for us and is better supported by the Matterhorn 2go app. This is by far the best semester start that we ever had. I hope that others have made similar good experience.
