Hi,

the default DEFER settings are very conservative indeed.
My favorite settings are

DEFERSTARTCOUNT   3                 # try 3 times before
DEFERTIME         0:10:00           # retry every 10 min.
DEFERCOUNT        1440              # retry for 10 days

This applies globally, no idea how to be more specific at this point.

I'm using this on clusters up to 176 nodes, it doesn't seem to hurt.
