I think the key point is if you want to learn some flavour of unix, then a
simple firewall router makes a good first project. I followed the cookbook
install of NetBSD on Erick Winklers site using a IIci with 8/230 and its
just about 1 year old with zero downtime. First install was an interesting
couple of evenings, but the next couple went better and better.

OTOH I have barely scratched the surface of learning more than seriously
basic stuff.

OTOOH I have one project mastered, and no fear of the next. Can do quotient
greatly enhanced.
