The way I think of the kernel is that it's the software that does all 
the interfacing with the hardware.  All the programs that you use 
talk to the kernel to access the hardware, e. g., when you save a 
file with MacOS you get the save file dialog box and then do your 
stuff from there it's the kernel that actually handles the details of 
the file save such as writing the file contents to the disk, updating 
the desktop database, etc.
