Look in: /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
The section for 'Screen' has what you are looking for. The line that
says:
Modes "640x480" "800x600"
defines what order the resolution for X is. You can edit the order if
you like. CTRL-ALT-+ should change the res on the fly.
I believe the first 'mode' is the first one that X tries.
There should also be something about virtual in the Screen section also.
You would want to set that to the same mode that's being used.
If it's already set to display 1024x768 but isn't. Try starting x from
the command line like this:
startx 2> x.log
this will dump all the startup text into the file x.log. You can then
scan through the x.log and see what the problem is. There should be an
entry saying what modelines it found, and which resolution it was using.
