I found that the Xamba was a pretty good start for me. 
http://xamba.sourceforge.net has the information to get started with it. By 
no means am I particularly knowledgeable when it comes to this sort of thing 
but it was straight forward enough for me to get on our home LAN which is 
run by a Win2000 machine. HTH...Miles
