I like Mandrake, especially on x86, and I'd really like to see it
succeed, but I don't think that its stock kernel and default
configurations work as well as YDL's on Old-World machines.
Beginning with YDL 2.2, absolutely everything works, including sound
and accelerated video (Rage 128 card), on my 7300, right out of the
box. I still had to edit XF86Config-4 to use DRI, but that's
understandably disabled by default.

However, YDL 2.2 is also where the problem of Disk space begins, at
least with the stock 2 GB drive that was in my 7300 at that time. A
lot of people with Old-World machines on the YDL list began reporting
failed installs at the time of the 2.2 release. I now have a 40 GB
ATA 100 HD and Sonnet tempo ATA 100 card so this is no longer a
problem on the 7300.

I did not have this problem with YDL 2.1.

Have you tried a smaller installation of YDL ?

Again, what does the installer say when in fails in YDL ? It fails
while installing packages or is it sooner than that ?
