netbsd is good, and apparently os x is based on that version of *nix. netbsd.org has a suggested reading list, some online and some books. i just finished downloading it myself and hope to play with it in the next couple of days. i thought i'd try a "pure" *nix first, and i wanted something that can run on my older machines without having to learn to use too many different os's (i've handled 3 at a time before, but it is hard when you're tired to remember the idiosyncrasies of each os.)
