That is a problem with the firmware in older systems, shipped before
OS X was a gleam in anyone's eyes. It is not a problem in the OS,
unless they go back to the OS 8.x/9.x boot loader (ew!) and scsi
drivers in small disk partitions (double ew!). There are some BIOS in
PC's that have issues with big disks too.

Mac OS X is supported on G3 or better Mac systems, so the only
systems that have this limitation are beige G3's (d*amn!), rev a and
b iMacs, and first gen B&W G3 towers.

They are emulating the 'Classic' Mac OS, where partitions come up as
separate volumes, even with icons on the Desktop. Windows users like
to see separate 'drives' too. They designed it to migrate existing
Mac users and Windows users (switch). In the process they gave the
UN*X people migrains when migrating ;)

>Gaaah, some days a guy just really wants to strangle Steve Jobs.

Strangle the guys at SGI, and at RedHat while you're at it. The
default installs of those OS's use 'one-big-disk' too. I suppose I
should have downloaded x86 Solaris when I had the chance to see if
Sun does it too...
