As long as we have access to the source code, it is.  :)  
However, the runtime environments are architecture specific.  
(PPC is fundamentally different than x86, and this makes a difference at the machine 
language level.)  
And Java is controlled by Sun, so it's not like we can just compile a JRE.  

As long as you have source code, it will (theoretically) run anywhere when you compile 
it.  
As long as you have a JRE, Java runs anywhere _without_ recompiling.  
But you still need to get the JRE for your platform first.  
It's the virtual machine, the abstraction layer between the software and the real 
machine, that makes WORA possible.
