Yup, console is your friend, especially with dt installed. Or maybe you don't need that in Linux. The only reason X is installed is "just because". I'm surprised that you find Blackbox too heavy, though. IceWM on the SE/30 seemed acceptable though admittedly I wasn't really doing much that would compete for the processor.

68k Mac under console is a very capable machine. I have a clock-chipped Quadra 605 to 33mhz doing web, ftp, ssh, telnet, DNS (resolving, cachine, and authoritative), gopher, and acting as the ssh gateway into my LAN from which I often do irc and other such things you use remotely-accessed Linux boxes for.
I've tried a Quadra 840AV under X, and it's quite usable. Wouldn't want to make a daily use out of it, but fun.
