Meanwhile, getting back on topic, if I were to try Linux on one of these PCI
PowerMacs, what would be the best distro to use?

YellowDog Linux is my choice. However, from a recent announcement, I am not sure if Old World Macs will be supported in the not yet released new version. YDL 3.0 should be fine. We use YDL for our firewall and internal mail server on 9600/300's.
