Going back to some job hunting I did a few years back, I would send of my CV in PDF format
We _require_ applicants supply their CV in PDF. If it comes in Word format, it goes to the dustbin.
Invariably I got a request back asking for it as a DOC file.
Many companies use automated tools that parse Word format files for key words as a first screening process. If your CV doesn't contain certain key words, your CV goes to the dustbin, even if you may be qualified. They can't run it through the tool unless it is in Word format.
Most places like to mess with whatever they are given, and I am pretty sure the bulk of CV are still on paper. OTOH most companies don't operate very intelligently on any level. Word wins by being the most mindless follow the herd solution. Remember the old saying, "nobody ever got fired for specifying IBM".
