I need to search for text patterns in a long varchar field ... what function
(if any) would I use for this operation?
There is no such feature and it isn't planned for any foreseable future.
If I ever get the 'stored procedures and triggers in java' finished, it should be possible to create a full text index on these columns using some index library, but until then ...
