No. Not installing from RPM. Installing using the tar package available on mysql download page. I installed the windows version on my pc without any problem. The linux version gave me those errors.
Ok I have found out. It seems that in redhat 8.0 the /etc/services file has a +i attrib to it. doesn't see this in my other 7.3 servers though. Installation is underway. Thanx addy!

I am guessing that you are installing from an rpm? Or are you using the sap provided installer? If you are using rpm be sure that it is not being ran under alternate credentials (e.g., su <some user like nobody>) that does not have write permissions.
Lastly, be sure that /etc/services exists and is writeable manually.

Hi All,
I encountered problems with installation on my Linux machine. It does not seem to be able to open /etc/services. I am logged in as root.
I am running : maxdb-all-linux-32bit-i386-7_5_0_5
The error message I get shortly after selecting option 10:
please enter profile id: 10
starting preparing phase of package Base 7.5.00.05 32 bit ---------------------------------------------------------
cannot open "/etc/services" to write installation exited abnormally at Fr, Dec 05, 2003 at 13:42:14
Hope someone can help me figure this thing out. Need to give a demo to management in 2 weeks time. Trying to show them what mysql/maxdb can do.
