I have a question regarding the two SAPDB installation methods, SDBINST and rpm. I know that once the software has been installed via rpm, it cannot be upgraded via SDBINST. I am wondering, though, whether it is possible to take a backup from a rpm instance and restore it on a system installed by SDBINST (same version, 7.4.3.30). I expected it to work, but my attempts have been unsuccessful. The database does not reach warm state before shutting down.
It should certainly be possible to restore a backup from a .tgz installation into a database from a sdbinst installation.
One common error occurs if you create the second database the regular way and do the restore afterwards. The database tries to apply the existing log, which of course does not match the restored data.
Try the 'create from backup' option when creating the database.
If this wasn't the problem, please post the end of knldiag (http://sapdb.2scale.net/moin.cgi/knldiag).
