You are both right and wrong ;-)

Cross platform backup & restore generally works, if the byte order of the platforms is 
the same. That is, from Wintel to Linux (on IA32) and backwards will work. It will 
fail if you try to restore a Wintel generated backup to a, lets say Sparc Solaris 
based installation.

It may have been left out from the documentation, because there ain't no such thing as 
a (completely) platform indepentent backup and restore.
