isql is part of unixodbc, isn't it ?
Have you tried the latest (compiled from source) driver ?
I remember I had problems with Debian Sarge .deb when trying to connect
with isql. I installed the latest (that whas several weeks ago) driver
and everything works fine (DBDesigner can't connect to MaxDB with
ODBC.., but isql does)
