Dear Mark, please remember, that this list is of the Open Source version of SAP DB/Max DB, i.e. version 7.03.00, 7.04.03, and 7.05 upwards. 7.04.02 was never released as Open Source, so if you need assistance for a particular problem, you should open an OSS message as SAP Customer.
Anyway, if the database is not on same computer as the DBMGUI, have you assured that the 'x_server' program is running?
